New Jersey native and often called the “Tony Hawk of Paintball” by some (at least by us), Greg Hastings has helped popularize one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States like few have, and is fiercely proud of it. But would you believe this diehard athlete is also a diehard gamer – as in videogamer? In our latest edition of the Playswitch Podcast, we speak with him on a variety of topics, including just how involved he was in creating the original Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball (very), his legal dispute with a certain publisher, and the joys of paintball itself. Few professional athletes are as unabashedly excited about their sport as Hastings, which leads us to what we all came out for, namely, talking his latest game – Greg Hastings Paintball 2.

After nearly a half-decade of waiting, fans will be able to pick up where the original Xbox game left off with the highly-anticipated sequel for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3 due next month. Featuring all-new gameplay modes, improved multiplayer, and promising the most authentic virtual recreation of the sport (outside of actually getting splattered) yet, Hastings hopes the game won’t just be popular in the digital arena, but will inspire fans to head outside and take up the real thing for themselves. Now that would be a real Achievement!

Of course, no conversation with Hastings these days can go far before running into the $13 billion dollar elephant in the room, namely his very public break-up with Activision, which includes his now-legendary legal battle to not only retain the gaming franchise he helped create, but the commercial ownership of his very name.

What may surprise fans most of all is just how involved Hastings and his team were in the creation of the original game, which was brought about not just for the love of the sport, but through it. “We raised the money from paintball,” says Hastings, adding “We made the game ourselves…we funded it, financed it, we developed it. When Activision came along the game was playable. We were playing the game. That’s what upset me. We did all the leg work. We did all the heart.” Of his victory he’s considerably more concise; demure even. “I survived the onslaught.”

But while he may have become an overnight sensation (at least to those who may never have picked up a paintball gun) with his heroic ‘David vs. Goliath’ tale against the world’s biggest publisher, the real Greg Hastings is far less boisterous than the legion of internet trolls and those all-too-willing Activison bashers would have you believe.

“I was misquoted in a few of those [past interviews]…it would have been great to publish with those guys for the rest of my career.” In fact, he fought to keep the relationship going, hoping to build on and expand the growing franchise’s wild success. “Why would you want to spend all this time in court and spend money on that when we could be spending that money on making the next great game? We had all this great momentum that was lost. It was just a shame.”

Since the break-up both Hastings and his digital namesake have moved on and have partnered with new publisher Majesco, a relationship he couldn’t be more ecstatic about. “They’ve done more for this game than my previous publisher did for all three games.” Citing the well-worn knowledge that games sell – but often not by themselves – cites his new publisher’s willingness to help aggressively market and bring the franchise to the masses. “They’ve done more for this game than my previous publisher did for all three games,” remarking how his game now enjoys the same amenities many feel are basic essentials, including “a game trailer, a full-functioning monster website that’s updated on a regular basis. Even the layman can see what has gone into marketing this game.”

It’s good stuff you definitely don’t want to miss. Speaking of something you don’t want to miss, Greg Hastings Paintball 2 targets the Xbox 360 and Wii consoles September 28th, and will be available for download on the PlayStation 3 (via PSN) shortly thereafter. With all the talk surrounding Activision lately it was only a matter of time until large gaming sites caught up with Greg and asked him about his battle with “The Giant”. I’m sure you all noticed that GHP2 is not being released by the same people as it once was, and Greg will tell you why.

Activision has lost a fan in Greg Hastings, the paintball playing pro who lent his name to two Activision-published games. According to Mr. Hastings, the mega publisher not only tried to “steal” his franchise, but also his identity.

Hastings, who also has a game to promote in Greg Hastings Paintball 2—this one’s published by Majesco—tells GamesRadar of his beef with the publisher of Modern Warfare and Guitar Hero. “Within 24 hours of me shipping my PlayStation 2 game, Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball Max’d, they sent me a letter and they said, ‘We feel you’ve abandoned your franchise, and we’re going to commence making games called Greg Hastings Paintball without Greg Hastings.’”

“A billion-dollar company tried to steal my identity, and I was able to fight and regain my identity,” Hastings claims. “That’s why I’m on cloud nine; I fought the giant and I’m a success story against Activision.”

We couldn’t resist poking a little fun at some of Hastings’ colorful quotes and very strong feelings towards his own project, but in all seriousness, he seems like a fantastic ambassador for his sport, and someone who is very keyed in on delivering a first-person shooting experience that even kids can enjoy (due to an “Everyone 10+” rating). He also strikes us as someone with the amazing ability to simultaneously toe the company line and say exactly what he’s thinking – a rare feat at an industry event where producers give hundreds of identical demos lifted from sterile fact sheets.

Reading through the comments not only has Greg earned the adoration from a lot of people who are familiar with the various stories from the once GHTP games publisher, but many have also said they are now interested in the game because of it. So go Greg!

I have received a few emails for the following so let me just let everyone know the dealio here.

#1. Release Date: The release date will be September 28th so mark your calendars! I know a lot have asked me why the push back and September is a big release month, and the 28th is the best choice for GHP2! So we’re gonna end September with a Paintball frenzy! Remember to add ghtpNET to your PSN and XBOX LIVE friends lists!

#2. PS3: The PS3 version of GHP2 is still coming. IT HAS NOT, emphasis on NOT, been cancelled! I know a few of you may have received calls from Gamestop if you had pre-ordered the game saying the publisher cancelled the game. That is incorrect. Let me give you the whole thing here.

The PS3 version is still going to be released but in a move to support the times we live in, heh, the PS3 version is going to be the first GREG HASTINGS PAINTBALL title to “DIGITAL!”. Yes, this means it’s going to be a PSN EXCLUSIVE! You’re going to get the same amazing experience without having to leave your house!

What would tempt me away from the last day of my Holiday weekend onto the internet?  Well, another GHP2 review of course!  This one comes courtesy of BSCReview.com

How many of you think you know me fairly well? *Looks around for a show of hands* OK, so for those of you who do, what is my only passion in the sports arena, besides Pittsburgh Penguins hockey? So when Majesco Entertainment invited me to their booth to both interview and hang out with Greg Hastings and his new video game – Greg Hastings Paintball 2 – I believe I may have soiled myself as I reveled in the news.

Greg Hastings, as a name, is the most successful in all of paintball. For 23 years the man has done it all in the sport, education being his primary focus. With his video games, he’s pushed the limits and packed as many features as possible. In Greg Hastings Paintball 2, players brave the elements in the unpredictable outdoors in this intense first-person paintball experience like never before. Got friends? Get 20 of them together for fast-paced multiplayer action, test your skills in brand new scenario modes, manage a team of skilled players from the real world, and even master a huge array of paintball markers (the guns, folks, the guns)!

More features include an improved map editor: now it’s even easier to create and edit your own fields to increase the challenge. An all new Cheat Meter enables you to avoid elimination by successfully wiping away paint splatter without being caught! How many ‘ballers wish they had this in real life??

Win tournaments to earn cash for new gear, players, and skill upgrades. The game will support the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, but as of this writing does not support the PlayStationMove or Kinect systems, and most likely won’t.

An improved control scheme – which I got to witness during my live demo with Greg one-on-one – allows players to quickly switch weapons, gun hands, and snap out of cover with absolute accuracy. It’s quite amazing just how detailed this game is with respect to the reality of the sport. I can actually mimic what I myself do on the field!

Boston Paintball Invert Area

There’s almost too much here in this game to cover every single detail, and believe me the fact sheet I’m looking at right now lists even more that I can’t fit into this article. I was given a thorough breakdown of the game with Greg Hastings himself, and being the paintball player I am, I had to marvel at what Super X Studios and Greg have done with the title. You can see the passion and care that went into the game just by the sheer enormity of the features and tweaking of the interface and gameplay mechanics.

So you’ve been hearing about how YOU can become part of the GHTP.net/GHP2 Street Team.  Well now is a chance to submit your details to be considered.

We are looking for approximately 30 dedicated GHTP/GHP2 fans to become part of the ghtp.NET/GHP2 Street Team.  With us so far?  Okay so here’s the deal.   Based on the submissions we receive we will pick ghtp.NET/GHP2 fans from around the country to help promote and get the word out there about GHP2.

You do not need to be in any specific area of the US.  Just go to the Street Team Signup Page and put in your City/State when you sign up!  That simple!

Just to say it again… we’ve modified the original program so that you can now sign up NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE in the US!

We are going to supply our Street Team members with everything they need to promote GHP2.  Flyers, stickers,  banners, and GHP2 information.  Pretty much everything we can think of we’ll get you.

What we need of you:

• Go to your local field(S) and get players interested.  You’ll give out stickers, flyers, information, etc.  You need to do this pretty much each weekend until we notify our members otherwise (we will keep you supplied with everything you need).
• Go to your local store(s) and give them stickers, flyers, and maybe even banners to put up in the store if they can.
• Go to your local Gamestop(s) and supply them with banners since they’re part of the GHP2 Tour of Duty 2010 sponsor.
• Get out on the net and get all the paintball and game sites talking about GHP2.  Be a hub of information.  Screenshots, Videos, release info, etc.  Don’t worry myself, Greg and the Dev team will be available to you in our Street Team forum to answer questions, or supply you with what you need.

The key part of all of this is you HAVE TO HAVE THE TIME TO DO THIS. I can’t stress this enough.  We are dedicating a lot of our resources to make sure you have everything you need, and we really need you to be able to dedicate the time that is necessary to do this.  We will have project tracking (where you can give status updates to us) and will be keeping track of your progress.  If  you are unable to do this, or don’t know, please don’t sign up.  We will have other contests in the future anyone can enter to win GHP2 swag, but this is a special side project.

So you become part of the Street Team.  What will you get in return:

Greg Hastings Paintball 2

I’ve never seen someone so pumped about paintball.

Wait, no. I dated a guy in high school who was really pumped about paintball.

Lemme try that again: I’ve never seen someone so pumped about a paintball video game. Hands down, Greg Hastings was the most enthusiastic demoer I’ve ever seen. His hands were flying. His face was animated and alive. He was all smiles, joy, and genuine love for his sport (and his game). Every mechanic was true to the sport: the dodging around obstacles; the peeking out around cover to shoot paintballs at that dude who nearly took your head off with the blue paintball; the courses set in the woods with real weather conditions. The everything. Even if paintball hasn’t been my style for a number of years, Greg had me pretty stoked about the game. You play as real paintball players from around the world; from kids to teens to adults; from beginners to pros; from the casual to the hardcore. If a player exists, he/she is probably hanging out in the gallery of players in Greg Hastings Paintball 2.

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 is the only E-Rated FPS on the market today, which is something to be really proud of. Most FPS games are not family friendly because they involve blood, gore, and general carnage. No carnage to be had in paintball. Just paint. And mud. And maybe a scraped elbow here and there.

Great to see not only is the game being received well, but Greg’s enthusiasm for the game alone is wooing people.  Go Greg!
